UltraMix Paver Joint Sand

UltraMix Paver Joint Sand

UltraMix Designer Series Paver Joint Sand is a premium blend of vivid colored sand for use with paver, flagstone, brick, and natural stone joints up to 1” wide. The UltraMix dust-free formulation provides superior structural strength during installation and prevents hazing issues when stabilized with liquid polymer NanoPave Joint Stabilizer & Sealer (JSS).

UltraMix is available in a wide variety of elegant colors and color blends, perfect for complimenting the most popular paver and hardscape surfacing products. UltraMix Sand goes through a proprietary color infusion process that results in a permanent, vivid color blend.

UltraMix Sand meets ASTM C-144 requirements for masonry and hardscape joint material sand. It installs quickly and easily by simply brooming into hardscape joints. UltraMix can be installed dry but is recommended for use with NanoPave JSS for stabilization and color enhancement.

Before starting a project what should be done to ensure best results?

  1. Calculate square footage of the project area and cross reference the UltraMix coverage chart to determine the amount of UltraMix Paver Joint Sand needed.

  2. Consider hardscape joint width, UltraMix is only recommended for joints from ?” - 1” in overall width.

  3. If stabilizing with NanoPave JSS;

    1. Check ambient and surface temperatures for application areas to ensure a suitable range for both installation and the curing process.

    2. Pause irrigation sprinklers and check weather forecast for any precipitation within 72 hours of applying NanoPave JSS.

    3. Perform a small test section to determine suitability of materials.

Is UltraMix Paver Joint Sand a water-activated polymeric sand?

No. Polymeric sands have been the industry standard for several years, but they can at times present a handful of issues including poor stabilization, surface hazing, and a lack of complementary colors. For those reasons, UltraMix was designed specifically for use with NanoPave 2-in-1 Joint Stabilizer & Sealer (JSS). UltraMix is available in a multitude of colors that match most premium hardscape paver products and provides for a dust and haze free installation.

Can UltraMix Paver Joint Sand be installed dry without stabilizing?

Yes. While it is normally recommended to stabilize hardscape joint material to help prevent erosion and paver displacement, UltraMix can be installed in a dry joint application and maintained accordingly.

Can UltraMix Sand be used to make mortar?

Yes. UltraMix Paver Joint Sand meets ASTM C-144 requirements for masonry and hardscape joint material sand. Depending on the desired outcome, either grey or white Portland cement powder can be used.

What are the most common projects to use UltraMix Paver Joint Sand on?

UltraMix is most commonly used on hardscape walkways and patios constructed with pavers, bricks, flagstone, and natural stone in both residential and commercial application projects.

Can UltraMix Sand be used in decorative planter beds or common areas?

Yes, and with so many unique color blends, UltraMix can be used to contrast or complement a wide array of landscaping features.

What tools are required to prepare the surface for UltraMix Paver Joint Sand?

Push broom, whisk broom, vibratory plate compactor (with rubber sole if needed), hand tamper.

What are the most common small joint project applications for UltraMix Paver Joint Sand?

Manufactured hardscape surface stones such as pavers and bricks are most common. Pavers are often referred to as interlocking pavers or simply interlocks as well. Paver stones are usually manufactured from clay or concrete and come available in a nearly endless array of colors and sizes. The pavers will often have bumpers on the sides to allow for equidistant joint spacing, commonly no more than ¼”.

What is the purpose of a hardscape joint?

A sand paver joint literally provides a cushion for the stones to allow for shift or movement. When a rigid stone is hard set next to others, the force from a point load or ground shift can cause the stones to crack or break completely. With a joint between, similar to expansion joints in concrete flatwork, the stones have leeway to prevent damage.

What is the benefit of using UltraMix Paver Joint Sand over a traditional polymeric sand?

Polymeric sands have long been the standard in hardscape. They are sands that contain a water activated, powdered polymer (often Portland cement powder). While easy to use, polymeric sands can present a few undesirable problems. These would include hazing of the hardscape surface upon water activation; inconsistent stabilization; and harmful, dusty installation steps. UltraMix Paver Joint Sand used in conjunction with NanoPave JSS virtually eliminates all of those issues by stabilizing a premium colored sand and offering an enhancing sealant to the paver stones.

Why is it better to use UltraMix Paver Joint Sand with NanoPave JSS in small joints?

UltraMix Designer Series Paver Joint Sand products broke the long standing tradition of plain color joint sands for pavers. Manufactured pavers are often expensive yet beautiful and come in an endless array of colors and color blends. Installing a traditional grey or tan polymeric sand with mismatched paver colors can significantly reduce the aesthetic. UltraMix features as many as 18 colors and color blends, all processed to a premium gradation of sand that is perfectly suited for joint widths from ?” up to ¾” and offers a dust free installation. Better yet, UltraMix was specifically designed to work hand in hand with the stabilizing and sealing qualities of NanoPave JSS.

How come UltraMix Paver Joint Sand is not recommended for use in larger joints over 1” in width?

Because sand is too fine of a material to stand up well on its own spanning that a gap of that size. Joints of 1” or larger will often be required to handle a point load from something like a patio chair leg, BBQ wheel or leg, or a high heel shoe. Common sand will disperse underneath these types of point loads, often times, even when stabilized. It is recommended to use a crushed stone material like decomposed granite (DG) because these materials are much stronger and rigid.

Can I use UltraMix Paver Joint Sand on flagstone and natural stone project?

Yes, UltraMix can be used with just about any hardscape surfacing material. The key is the overall joint width. If the flagstone or natural stone materials will be set in a way where the average joint width is less than 1”, then UltraMix will be an excellent complementary joint material to use especially in conjunction with NanoPave JSS.

Can UltraMix Paver Joint Sand be used in joints wider than 1”?

No, it isn’t recommended. Sand will abrade away in wider joints, and load bearing strength becomes an issue.

Why is UltraMix Paver Joint Sand not recommended for joints larger than 1”?

A fine material like sand can have issues with load bearing strength when spanning a large area. Sand contains small granules, often uniform in size, making it more likely to wear away compared to a traditional ¼” minus or ?” minus crushed stone material. These materials are processed to contain a proportion of smaller to larger aggregates which will create a more dense and durable surface rigidity.

How do I install UltraMix Paver Joint Sand into the hardscape joint?

Sweep sand into the paver joints using a push broom, then use a vibratory plate compactor (rubber sole) to settle sand between the paver joints. This may need to be repeated to assure the joints are properly filled with sand. Using a push broom and a leaf blower clean any loose sand or impediments of the paver surface. Any residue that is not removed will be sealed onto the pavers, so make sure the surface is completely clean before applying NanoPave JSS.

Is compaction of jointing material required for narrow joints?

It is often stated by paving stone manufacturers to use a vibratory plate compactor to help settle the sand joints evenly. This is most common with joint widths of less than a ½” in width.

Is compaction of jointing material required for wider joints?

Although it is not required, hand tool compaction in wider joints can help prevent air pockets, inconsistencies, and abrasion.

What is the best way to ensure success on a NanoPave JSS project?

When planning a project from the beginning, all installation variables can be taken into consideration and recommended construction methods can be followed. Skipping steps or relying on components from an older installation can often times lead to problems or undesired results.

Can UltraMix Paver Joint Sand be used on existing hardscape installations (flagstone, pavers, brick, etc)?

Yes. It is highly recommended to clean, repair, and reset the hardscape pavement if needed. Next, remove existing and install the new UltraMix jointing material. At this point it is often suitable to apply the NanoPave JSS product, although each project has its own set of variables. To ensure optimal results for existing projects, it is recommended to contact our Technical Support department directly at 877-356-2250.

What is the best way to clean my tools after installing UltraMix Paver Joint Sand?

Simply rinse off your tools with water. It is recommended to clean equipment immediately after use.

How often will joints filled with UltraMix Paver Joint Sand need maintenance?

This depends on whether NanoPave JSS was used to stabilize the joints. If so, follow the maintenance guidelines specific to NanoPave JSS. If UltraMix Paver Joint Sand was installed dry and left unstabilized, additional sand can be added at any time as needed.

What should I expect from a NanoPave JSS treated hardscape surface where UltraMix Paver Joint Sand was used?

NanoPave JSS is a durable, UV stable product, but still requires occasional care and maintenance. In average conditions a maintenance coat is recommended every 24 - 72 months. Much like a wood or stone sealant, the maintenance coat works to rejuvenate and strengthen the joint material, increasing the life of the surface. The maintenance process is dependent upon 2 factors; the amount of usage and weather conditions. Heavier usage and inclement weather events may reveal the need for minor repairs, and it is recommended to repair these areas promptly.

How should opened and unopened material be stored?

It is recommended to store unopened bags of UltraMix Paver Joint Sand out of direct sunlight and inclement weather. The same is true for opened bags, although unused material from opened bags can also be transferred to 5-gallon buckets for storage.
