NanoLok 90

NanoLok 90

NanoLok 90 is a nano-polymer, fortifying admixture for all types of cementitious products including cement, mortar, plaster, stucco, and tile adhesives. Cured mortars modified with NanoLok 90 have excellent water resistance and adhesion to a variety of substrates, in addition to increased compressive and flexural strength.

NanoLok 90 is a water-based, VOC-free product that reduces cracking and separation by increasing flexibility with its nano-polymer, cross-linking technology. It can also be used in patch and repair slurry mixes for fixing cracks and blemishes in concrete or mortar.

NanoLok 90 simply replaces a portion of the water needed to mix any Portland cement based product. Refer to the product mix ratio chart for details on a multitude of different project applications.

Before starting a project what should be done to ensure best results?

  1. If using as admixture for concrete, mortar, and other Portland cement based adhesives, NanoLok 90 can be added to water in a measuring cup before pouring into material.
  2. If using as an admixture for patch or repair slurry, NanoLok 90 can be applied as a primer coat using a paint brush before adding to water for slurry mix.
  3. Consult NanoLok 90 mix ratio chart for information specific to various types of projects.

What should I expect from a concrete or mortar treated with NanoLok 90?

NanoLok 90 will provide increased flexural strength and reduce cracking in concrete, and provides improved adhesion and weather resistance in mortar. A slurry mixture using NanoLok 90 as an admixture and primer coat significantly increases the life cycle of the repair.

Why is NanoLok 90 better than other options?

NanoLok 90 is VOC-free and safe for everyday, practical use. It is formulated with a nano-polymer crosslinker that builds a bond in tiny pockets of Portland cement based products. This greatly reduces the effects of weather degradation and minimizes cracking from expansion and contraction.

What are the most common projects to use NanoLok 90 on?

NanoLok 90 is most commonly used on hardscape and masonry projects where mortar is used. This would include bricks, stone veneer, masonry blocks, and more. NanoLok 90 is also commonly used in concrete of all purposes, such as driveways, walkways, curbs, and precast products.

Can I use NanoLok 90 for interior tile and masonry projects?

Yes, NanoLok 90 is commonly used in thin-set mortar used to lay tiles. NanoLok 90 is perfectly safe for interior or exterior use.

What is a patch and repair slurry mix and how does NanoLok 90 make it better?

A patch and repair slurry mix can be made by mixing masonry sand and Portland cement powder with NanoLok 90 and water. A slurry is typically mixed wetter than traditional mortar or concrete to allow for application to small cracks and damaged areas. NanoLok 90 fortifies the slurry and dramatically increases its adhesion properties. A primer coat of NanoLok 90 can be painted onto the repair area for even better adhesion.

What tools are required to use NanoLok 90?

No specialty tools are required when using NanoLok 90 as a fortifying admixture other than those needed to mix concrete or mortar.

Are any other tools needed when using NanoLok 90 for patch and repair slurry?

Aside from small scale mixing equipment (bucket, stir stick, mortar trowel), a paint brush can be used to apply an NanoLok 90 primer coat to the area being repaired.

How is NanoLok 90 applied?

NanoLok 90 is should be mixed with clean water before adding to Portland Cement based products. See product mix ratio chart for details regarding specific applications. Pour admixture solution into mixing container or mechanical mixer. Mix solution thoroughly with material. Avoid over-mixing, or mixing at high speeds that can cause foaming.

How much NanoLok 90 is needed to mix at the recommended ratios?

All recommended mix ratios for NanoLok 90 represent the water component to NanoLok 90 component. For example, a 2:1 ratio means 2 parts water and 1 part NanoLok 90. Further, if 32 total ounces of water is needed to a select amount of mortar effectively; Approximately 6.4 ounces of NanoLok 90 and 25.6 ounces of water would be needed to mix at a 4:1 ratio, or; Approximately 10.7 ounces of NanoLok 90 and 21.3 ounces of water would be needed to mix at a 2:1 ratio.

Can I use more NanoLok 90 than the recommended mix ratios?

Yes, but the mix ratios represent best practice considering fortification and curing expectancies. Using more than the recommended NanoLok 90 ratio can affect curing times and workability in some scenarios and temperature ranges. Before working on a large scale, perform a test mix using desired amount of NanoLok 90 to determine suitability.

Can I apply NanoLok 90 to concrete that is flaking, chipping, or crumbling?

Yes, NanoLok 90 can be applied to directly to chipping or crumbling concrete using a paint brush. The crosslinking bond will penetrate the material and provide stability. It should be noted however, that the NanoLok 90 coating can affect the appearance of the concrete once brushed on. This is only recommended for concrete or mortar that is wholly intact, but flaking away at the surface level from use or weather.

What should I do if it rains before BarkSealer has cured?

If rain is forecast before the surface has cured, it is recommended to tarp the treated area with plastic. If possible, keep the tarp suspended above the hardscape surface to allow airflow and prevent any sealant damage. Remove plastic after the rain event to allow for evaporation and curing.

How do I apply a NanoLok 90 modified patch and repair slurry mix?

A patch and repair slurry mix is most commonly applied using a masonry or concrete trowel, but can also be applied using a grout bag. It is important to apply the slurry only the area needing repair, as it can adhere or stain other areas.

What is the best way to ensure success on a NanoLok 90 project?

When planning a project from the beginning, it is important to follow the recommended mix ratios and perform a test section whenever possible to answer any other questions that may arise regarding suitability.

How can NanoLok 90 help and existing project?

To be completely effective as a fortifying admixture, NanoLok 90 must be mix with water and then directly mixed with the material being used. However, NanoLok 90 can be used to repair existing concrete or mortar areas using a primer coat and fortified slurry mix. NanoLok 90 can also be painted onto flaking, chipping, or crumbling concrete and mortar although it can affect the surface aesthetic.

What is the best way to clean my tools after applying the NanoLok 90?

When finished mixing NanoLok 90, simply rinse off your tools with water and a soft bristle brush if needed.

How often do I need to perform maintenance on a NanoLok 90 project?

There is no maintenance needed unless working with flaking, chipping, or crumbling concrete and mortar on an existing project. NanoLok 90 can be used in patch and repair slurries as needed. Otherwise, a hardscape sealer such as NanoPave Hardscape Sealer can be used to protect and enhance hardscape and masonry projects.

What should I expect from a NanoLok 90 modified concrete or mortar?

NanoLok 90 will dramatically increase adhesion, weather resistance, and flexural strength in most modified concrete and mortar mixes. These traits will also reduce cracking and degradation over the life cycle of the material it is mixed with. -

How should opened and unopened material be stored?

In either instance NanoLok 90 should be stored in an area that meets two vital conditions; no direct exposure to sunlight and within the recommended temperature range. The shelf-life of NanoLok 90 is 4+ years if stored in optimal conditions. For opened NanoLok 90 containers make sure that the container is airtight and the lid is securely fastened. If the original container has been compromised then it is recommended to transfer the product to a compatible container. Improper storage can result in the polymer formulation being compromised.
